A career infantryman whose military service spanned over two decades, Garcia enlisted in the U.S. Army on 10 September 1950.

He first served with Company M, “The Borinqueneers” 65th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War,

Later serving in Vietnam War as First Sergeant, Company B, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division (Americal).

Garcia was awarded:

  • Bronze Star Medal,
  • Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC),
